The upgrade was painless, as I’ve come to expect from WordPress – v2 is a great upgrade too. Running a WordPress blog and you’ve not upgraded yet – why not?

All OK Now
This site, pnotepad.org and friends all appear to have been down for the last day or two, the Linux VM they run on seemed to be completely toasted. Hopefully everything is now back to normal and I won’t have lost too much mail. This reminds me that I really need to set up an automated script to check that all the sites are online!

Phew!
What a month! In the last month I have:
- Moved from my flat into my mate’s place (including putting all of our stuff into storage) while we waited for our next flat to become free.
- Seen Ben Folds live at Southampton Guildhall
- Enjoyed a very muddy Glastonbury Festival (my 7th!):
- Moved from my mate’s place into our new flat, then moving all of our stuff back out of storage, fixing the non-draining shower and unpacking lots of stuff
- Realised that moving from a furnished flat into an unfurnished flat is going to be problematic
- Discovered that good beds and mattresses are hideously expensive
- Developed a taste for eating dinner from the top of a packing box (luckily, as I’ll be doing that for a while – turns out all furniture is expensive!)
- Seen U2 live at the Cardiff Millenium Stadium, supported by the Killers and Starsailor – the second time for the Killers in a week!
- Played my first gig with my new band, Marlon
- Fixed a whole bunch of PN bugs and added lots of new code that isn’t quite ready yet!
- Not had enough sleep!

Server Downtime
Phew, my assorted web sites (untidy.net, pnotepad.org and a few misc others) are finally back online after a hairy gentoo rebuild/upgrade.
Note to self: Don’t expect that a kernel/glibc/gcc/apache/php/mysql update is going to go easily – you should know better, especially when gentoo compiles everything from source. A couple of cautionary tales to come…

WordPress 1.5 Released
While we were sleeping, WordPress 1.5 (“Strayhorn”) was released!
Amusingly, WordPress uses a similar set of release names to Programmers Notepad – they’re all great Jazz names. Both PN and WordPress have had Mingus releases, and the new release is Strayhorn. In Matt’s own words:
This release is named “Strayhorn” in honor of Billy Strayhorn the pianist and sublime composer who worked closely with Duke Ellington and wrote tunes like “Take the A Train” and “Lush Life.” We thought he was perfect to represent the power and elegance of this release, which has been under intense development and testing the past few months.
I’ve been running on nightlies of WordPress 1.5 for a while – it’s fantastic.

Search Engines vs. Spammers
Search Engines: 1, Spammers: 0.
In an exciting bit of news for bloggers everywhere, Google and a number of other search engines are rolling out support for a new attribute for hyperlinks that tells the search engine not to follow or index that link.
Your new spam-safe links should take the form:
<a href=”somelink” rel=”nofollow”></a>
This removes the benefit that spammers got from posting their links in your comments, i.e. a higher PageRank (other ranking systems are available).
WordPress, Six Apart and a number of other blogging software community members have announced their support and hopefully the tools will soon make this transparent.
More news and details on the Google blog…
update: This blog now uses rel=”nofollow” on all comment links, thanks to a timely wordpress plugin from Clint Ecker. Here’s hoping it makes a difference!

First Spam
My blog has been up here for approximately 8 hours, and already the first attempt at spam from a blackjack site. Unbelievable.
[update] Ironic, of course that moments later the same spamidiot (whether bot or human) attempted to post spam to this entry too!
